Primary Purpose:

 

Assist in the provision of safety and protection for students by monitoring and communicating campus activity to the administration and/or campus-based law enforcement officer(s).

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

Student Management

 

  1. Assist administration in maintaining an effective operation by monitoring the halls and surrounding school premises.
  2. Monitor and report student behavior and student conduct in relation to the Student Code of Conduct.
  3. Report conflict or confrontation between students and disturbances to the Principal or Assistant Principal.
  4. Record data for supervisory staff, such as student conflicts or unusual occurrences.

 

  1. Report tardiness, truancies, and other related incidents to the appropriate school administrator.
  2. Perform other job-related duties as may be designated by the school principal or designee.
  3. Check for students’ hall passes and tardy slips.
  4. Escort students to the principal, assistant principal, counselor, liaison officer or nurse. Hall monitors shall not participate in time-out or retain any student in isolation, in a one-on-one scenario.

 

Campus Safety

 

  1. Watch for and report irregularities such as fire hazards, security doors left unlocked, and any unusual activity.
  2. Direct authorized visitors to their proper destination; report and monitor unauthorized visitors.

 

Other Duties

 

  1. Work cooperatively with office personnel to inform students of problems with vehicles (i.e., improperly parked, lights on, etc.) 
  1. Assist law enforcement personnel as directed by school liaison officer. 
  1. Attempt to first notify a campus administrator or school liaison officer of any situation requiring immediate attention. If unable to contact a campus administrator or school liaison officer, then notify police, fire department, or other appropriate authority of any situation requiring immediate attention.

 

  1. Assist with traffic safety, including student arrival and departure.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

 

None. Hall monitors are not to assume administrative responsibilities such as the dispensation of disciplinary consequences or assume direct responsibility for, or supervision of, students in violation of the Student Code of Conduct. Hall monitors are not to assume the role or duties of police or security officers.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

 

Maintain emotional control under stress. Continuous walking and standing. Possible exposure to vehicle exhaust. On occasion may work outside and be exposed to extreme temperatures and inclement weather.

Non-physical intervention techniques shall be the primary form of intervention. Use of physical restraint or intervention may only be used as set forth in TCISD Policy FO, Local, which reads, in part:

“Any District employee may, within the scope of the employee’s duties, use and apply physical restraint to a student if the employee reasonably believes restraint is necessary in order to protect a person, including the person using physical restraint, from physical injury.”
