Primary Purpose:

 

Assist in the direction and management of the overall instrumental music program for the district. Provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular band activities and ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), and district requirements. Plan to achieve district, region, and state recognition.

 

 

Qualifications:

 

      Education/Certification:

      Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university

      Valid Texas teaching certificate

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program

Ability to manage budget

Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing band

Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data

Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills

 

Required Experience:

At least two years teaching/band directing experience.

Experience in directing concert band, solo and ensemble, all-region preparation.

Experience in beginning Brass pedagogy.

 

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

Program Planning

  1. Work within band staff to direct beginner classes, concert band, solo and ensemble, all-region.
  2. Assist in establishing performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student’s eligibility to participate in band.
  3. Provide for band participation at extracurricular events, including concerts, football games, pep rallies, parades, UIL activities, and other competitions.
  4. Assist in arranging transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town events.
  5. Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules, UIL rules, and board policy in the band area.
  6. Support band booster club activities.
  7. Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responds to student needs.
  8. Recommend policies to improve program.
  9. Help in overseeing process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all band equipment.

Instruction

  1. Develop and implement plans for instrumental music program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  2. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
  3. Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  4. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  5. Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  6. Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

 Student Management

  1. Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with the LISD Student Code of Conduct and student band handbook.
  2. Accompany and supervise students on out-of-town trips.
  3. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Communication

  1. Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  2. Maintain professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.

Teaching Strategies

  1. Use various teaching methods or strategies based on individual student needs.
  2. Utilize different teaching styles based on understanding of the lower level student’s specific needs.
  3. Aware of and follow the LISD band grade level curriculum.
  4. Use the LISD counting system with all grade levels.
  5. Master and utilize effective skills of working with full band rehearsals.
  6. Establish, follow and complete goals within sectional rehearsals.

 Instrumental Knowledge

  1. Evidence of sufficient knowledge and understand of teaching primary instrument.
  2. Evidence of sufficient knowledge of the fingerings of all instruments.
  3. Demonstrate good understanding of and enforce students’ use of proper seated positions, and posture while standing during rehearsals and performances.
  4. Demonstrate understanding of all embouchures.
  5. Demonstrate a good understanding of problem-solving methods necessary to help students correct any inappropriate skills that develop when learning to play their instruments.
  6. Display and relay the correct cleaning care for all instruments.

 Classroom Management

  1. Keep informed of rules, expectations, and consequences of behavior concerning students.
  2. Maintain a proper learning environment in the classroom.
  3. Maintain the attention and respect of the students.
  4. Maintain a positive environment for the students.
  5. Work to complete any other special assignments, projects, or duties assigned by supervisor.

 

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent district and occasional statewide travel. Prolonged and irregular hours. Outdoor and indoor work. Exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather. Ability to life and move band equipment up to 50 pounds.
